TITLE OF UNIT: LESSON TITLE:
Reason With Shapes and Their Attributes Caterpillar Math
| |
GRADE LEVEL: First Grade
| |
INTRODUCTION: This math lesson is about geometric shapes. The lesson will introduce pre geometry skills and also touch on some language arts. The math lesson will show different shapes and how to identify them. There is a computer assessment for the shapes that incorporates language arts by having students complete sentences that pertain to specific shapes.
.
Background
The students will be shown a caterpillar video on from youtube on the smart board. They will be asked to look for different shapes throughout the video. This will guide the students to create their own geometric caterpillar during the lesson.
Lesson Purpose The students will create a caterpillar on an iPad using five geometric shapes After creating the caterpillar, students will show their work and tell what shapes (naming then specifically) that they chose to make their caterpillar. The students will be encouraged to make their caterpillars unique.
| |
LEARNING GOALS: .
1.) The students will learn pre-geometry skills as well as develop fine motor skills.
2.) The students will understand positioning and language skill by completing the Shapes and Places assessment on the computer.
| |
OBJECTIVES:
1.) The students will be able to identify, during whole group instruction, five different geometric shapes (rectangle, triangle, square, circle, diamond)
2.) After a review of geometric shapes, students will be able to choose the correct shapes and put them together to make a caterpillar while working on an iPad.
3.) Students will independently complete a Shapes and Places computer assessment with a score of 80% or better..
| |
VOCABULARY: Rectangle, Triangle, Square, Circle, ,Diamond

MATERIALS/SUPPLIES:
Smart Board, iPads,
| |
RESOURCES:
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
ODE : K-8 Standards Progression
Common Core Standards pg. 10 “Reason With Shapes and Their Attribute”
| |
TIME/DURATION:
Twenty-Thirty Minutes

ACADEMIC CONTENT STANDARD(s):
| |
MOTIVATIONAL TECHNIQUES (Anticipatory Set):
A caterpillar with different body part shapes will be used to see what shapes the students can see. Anticipate that the students will all choose “circle”, since that is the most obvious shape. Encouragement will be made to find other less obvious shapes. Students will be asked” Can you come up and draw that shape on the smart board? Tell everyone how many sides this shape has.” (or does not have ie; circle)
| |
LESSON STEPS
|
Step #
|
Specific strategies?
|
Specific questions?
|
Anticipated Issues?
|
1 Introduce the caterpillar with different shapes.
|
On the smart board.
|
Ask students if they can pick out 5 of the shapes that were given to them. Ask students to be specific.
|
Most students will answer with “circle” since that is the most obvious shape.
Internet or smart board connections may not work.
|
2 Review shapes with IXL math program on smart board.
|
Whole class participation; taking turns going to the board and answering questions. http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-1/identify-2-dimensional-shapes
|
Ask the students how many sides each shape has and count the sides.
|
Some students may not know the name of each shape.
|
3 Have the students work on iPads and create a caterpillar with different shapes that were talked about.
|
Ask students to show their completed project to the class. Ask them to name the shapes on their caterpillar.
|
Some students may not have the fine motor skill to complete the task. They will be paired with a peer model.
| |
4Students will be given a computer assessment.
|
To be done independently and used for assessment.
|
Ask students for questions
|
Internet connection problems.
|
ADAPTATIONS for DIVERSE LEARNERS:
· Students who have delayed fine motor skill will be paired with a peer model during the iPad use..
· Visually impaired students will have large font or magnified screens.
· Auditory impaired students will be have headphones for all devices and a portable microphone will be worn by the teacher.
· Students who struggle with visual perception will be given an iPad with the caterpillar face already drawn on the paper. These students will “draw” the body.
· Students on lower reading levels will be given the Congruent Shapes assessment rather than the Shapes and Places assessment.
| |||
ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION:
Students will be assessed by:
· Identifying geometric shapes correctly on the IXL math program
· Completing shapes and places computer assessment with 80% accuracy
· Completing a unique caterpillar using the http://drawisland.com / website and be able to name each shape that was used.
.The student’s geometric caterpillars will be presented on the smart board during their presentation.

REFLECTIVE SELF-ASSESSMENT (what particular strengths do you possess that will promote your teaching of this lesson; are there challenges that you have to address in terms of your knowledge or skills prior to teaching the lesson?)
Chris ; I feel the best strength I have to teach this lesson is having classroom experience. I have worked in many elementary school classrooms and have learned many different techniques from various teachers. I feel the technique that works the best is getting students involved. This is a first grade lesson plan, and by using iPads and the smart board, it keeps student’s attention and is a great way to introduce technology to young students.
My biggest challenge is having to actually teach the lesson and be able to use all of the technology that I know and have learned and pass it on to my students. Another big challenge for me is having to deal with any technology problems. I am going to have to learn to adapt to internet glitches or connection problems. When the smart board isn’t cooperating, I am going to have to have something for my students to do while I fix the problem. However, after learning new skills in my Educational technology course, I am confident that I will be able to overcome any challenge that I encounter.
